I’ve honestly been quiet about the Coronavirus, because I’ve been working my own mindset – which includes putting myself on a news diet and detaching from all the fear mongering out in the world. Doesn’t mean I’m not staying informed or being planful – I’m just practicing fierce boundaries on where I put my external and internal attention.
With that said, I cherish this community we’ve built together and deeply respect my role as the leader here, so I wanted to share more with you…
This conversation will be one part mindset (duh!) and one part biz strategy, so I encourage you to join in and take what you need.
And if you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I don’t sugar-coat things – and my clients are finding that especially helpful during this time. So the conversation below is going to be some of that real talk, but I’m confident it’s going to inspire you and help you feel more empowered as we forge ahead!
I’m not saying the below is the cure for all your worries. But it WILL take the edge off and help you feel better. And honestly? The therapist in me wants to remind the whole world that our mental health is one of the greatest predictors of our physical health. So remember – one of the best ways to stay healthy and safe during this time is to honor and nourish your emotional health all day every day, first and foremost. Doing this will also allow you to care for and keep your loved ones safe too.
Mindset Strategy #1
Where we put our focus directly influences how we feel. What we decide is true for us determines what we experience. How much time we spend in fear/doubt/victim-mode is 100% up to us.
Look, I’m not saying this to make light that we ARE dealing with scary stuff right now, and that the concerns we all have are real. But what I am trying to do this week is REMIND you that YOU are in charge of how you feel and what you experience (not anything outside of you).
And when our external circumstances get tough, that’s exactly when mindset work is most important. Because it can be so easy to forget that WE are in charge of how we feel…because we are in charge of what we think and what we focus on.
So your job today (and everyday, really), is to watch where you put your focus, watch what you let in (news media, I’m lookin’ at you), and decide what you want to be true during this time.
For example, I’ve decided that what’s true for me right now is this: I’m going to learn how to surrender control even more and how to cultivate even deeper ease and grace within myself. This doesn’t mean I’m not paying attention to what’s going on or taking precautions. I’ve just decided to think about this situation in a certain way that helps me feel good and trusting.
Mindset Strategy #2
Yesterday, I talked about the need to be the fierce watcher of our thoughts and to remember that we’re in control of how we feel. With all that said, the goal isn’t perfection here. You’re going to still feel worried, in fear, and stressed out sometimes. Not because your mindset work isn’t working, but because you’re a human having a human experience.
So my call to you today is this – find what works to help you return to your center. Get in the habit of catching yourself going into old negative thought patterns. Use your best strategies to help you return to how you want to feel and to remind you of your own power.
Because THAT’s the real mindset work. Mindset work isn’t about achieving some zen place in your thoughts 24/7. Mindset work is about catching yourself when you’ve gone down the rabbit hole in your thoughts or stepped out of your power. And then knowing how to get yourself back to a decent headspace.
Mindset Strategy #3
The need for us to prioritize self-care and self-love is at an all-time high right now. As much for our physical health as for our overall well-being. No matter how much we’re working our mindsets each day (and if you’ve been following along with us this week, you definitely are workin’ your mindset), we’re still taking in a lot of intense energy each day — e.g., the ongoing safety warnings, concerns of our clients, worries about our biz and loved one, etc.
Again, we’re humans having a human experience, so we’re going to be impacted by the messages and energy out there. Which means it’s our job to take rest and nourishment super seriously. Build it into your schedule each day! For example, I’ve added in a second block of time for mindset work every day this week, and I’ve also decided to end work early each day to go do something joyful.
I’m not saying you have to do these exact things, because everyone’s schedules and needs are different. The point here is that I know what I need to give myself more of this week to stay balanced and happy (and so I can continue to love my loved ones and serve my clients), and I’m unapologetic about making sure I’m giving it to myself.
Business Strategy #1
Before you make any big decisions or pivots in our business, the first thing I want you to do is simply evaluate your time and schedule. For a lot of us, some pretty serious things have changed with your schedule lately, but all that means is we have to adapt with it.
Give yourself 15 minutes today to look at your schedule for the rest of the week. Where do you have openings? Where don’t you have openings? What are you priority income-producing tasks? Where do you need to move the puzzle pieces around to ensure you priority tasks get done?
Knowing what you absolutely must focus on, what you can let go for right now, and when you have availability will absolutely be the difference between those business owners who thrive during this time and the ones who struggle.
Business Strategy #2
It’s time to get creative and be innovative in our businesses, people! As business owners, the best thing we can do in this situation is to radically accept our current reality and be available to come up with new ways to serve our people and sell our services. So instead of looking at this situation as a problem or a barrier, we can decide it’s an opportunity to serve and sell in new and innovative ways.
Now look – I’m not suggesting you have to majorly overhaul anything (in fact I wouldn’t suggest majorly overhauling anything right now). What I’m saying is to begin thinking about ways you can adjust your messaging, your marketing, your offer delivery to best match the needs and demands of your target market.
For example, nothing is drastically changing about the way I do business. But, I AM adjusting some of my marketing and where/how I’m pitching my services to match the current needs of my market. And I’m helping my clients find ways to pivot and adapt that still allows them to be lucrative, just in new ways. For example, one of my clients had booked several speaking gigs in the next few months that we’ve turned into an online presentation, and that we’re going to re-purpose to a passive income product next. So instead of throwing in the towel on her speaking gigs for the next several months, we got creative and this led to her creating another passive income stream that we wouldn’t have thought of otherwise!
Business Strategy #3
Now is the perfect time to flex or expand your CEO muscles. This is your business and your life – YOU are in charge here. Meaning – you’re being called to step into your boss shoes right now to make some important decisions for your business.
Schedule a meeting with yourself this week to take a look at things – your marketing, your offers, your schedule, your cash flow. Just like if you were the CEO of United Airlines or Target, you’d have to come to the table to evaluate what’s working, what’s not, and where you need to make some adjustments.
But don’t do this from a place of fear – do this from a place of intentionality and desire to lead and continue growing your business. Target’s not going to throw their hands up now, and neither should you. In fact, as small business owners, we are WAY better equipped than large companies at pivoting and adjusting during times like this, but it does require us to be planful ahead of time.
Now I’d love to hear from YOU! Share with us one mindset or business strategy you’re already using during this time to feel better. Or, where are you currently feeling stuck?
